Lesson 3: Presentation and Public Speaking Skills
Presentations are a powerful form of one-to-many oral communication used to inform, persuade, train, or motivate an audience.
Stages of an Effective Oral Presentation:
- Preparation:
- Analyze the Audience: Consider their knowledge level, interests, and expectations.
- Define the Purpose: Inform, persuade, demonstrate, or entertain?
- Structure the Content: Create a logical flow: Introduction -> Body -> Conclusion.
- Research and Development:
- Gather accurate and relevant information.
- Develop visual aids (slides, charts, handouts) to support key points.
- Rehearsal:
- Practice delivery to check timing, smoothness, and use of aids.
- Builds confidence and helps identify areas for improvement.
- Delivery:
- Opening: Grab attention, state your purpose.
- Body: Present main points clearly, using stories, examples, and visual aids.
- Conclusion: Summarize key messages, provide a strong closing statement, and invite questions.
- Follow-up:
- Handle questions professionally.
- Evaluate your own performance for continuous improvement.
Characteristics of an Effective Speaker/Presenter:
- Confidence and Clarity: Speaks with assurance and articulates points clearly.
- Audience Awareness: Tailors language and content to the listeners.
- Effective Use of Visual Aids: Supports the speech without reading from slides.
- Engaging Delivery: Uses vocal variety (pace, tone, volume), eye contact, and appropriate gestures.
- Handles Nerves: Manages anxiety through preparation and positive self-talk.
Persuasive Communication:
- The art of guiding an audience toward adopting an idea or action through logical argument, emotional appeal (pathos), and speaker credibility (ethos).
Essential in sales, leadership, change management, and advocacy.
